CHAPTER 11
I wake up the next morning tangled in the sheets.
“Good morning sweetheart,” Chip says dreamily. He’s dressed in his clothes from the night before, minus the disguise. I flip off my bed still tangled in sheets with a loud thump. Holy shit! My hands brush over my bra and panties but nothing else. I feel sick, and the blinding light hurts my eyes. My head is spinning. My mouth is dry. And my stomach feels empty, but I’m not hungry. I’m so nauseated. I find my way back to the bed, and Chip helps me lie down again. I pull the covers over my face and fall back to sleep.
When I wake up later, I try to recall what happened last night. I remember Tom, and the plan, and not sticking to it. I remember being full of love and Chip in my room. I glance at the window and call Alice.
“When Chip gets there, tell him to call me,” I say hoarsely. I sound awful.
“Why? What happened?”
“Not so loud my head is hurting.”
“Sounds like you have a hangover,” she laughs.
“Last night was a disaster.”
“You should come over and see PB. After you left and Chip never came back from checking on you, PB bought a few bottles of liquor. He got so messed up. Then, at about five in the morning, he kept saying, “He’s coming home. They’re not doing anything.” He was pretty upset Chip never came home. He’s sleeping it off in the bathroom.”
“I’m coming over,” I hang up, put on some clothes, and go down the stairs. If I really want to be mean I could go over there and bang pans together to make Grayson’s hangover worse. Instead I pick up some coffee. He did kind of take care of me yesterday and cut me off from the wine.
I arrive at Alice’s house, but Chip is nowhere to be found. In the bathroom I sit on the floor next to Grayson. He peers up at me for a second and then sticks his head in the toilet and barfs.
“Hey babe,” he says, wiping his mouth on his arm. Not the most attractive sight to see when I also have a hangover.
“I brought you coffee.”
I hold my nose because he has a horrible smell radiating from his body—a mix of vomit and alcohol. Once I have him sitting upright without falling to either side I give him the coffee. Alice passes by the bathroom with all the empty liquor bottles in a bin and holds them up for me to see. She mouths ‘shit-faced’ to me.
“You need to take a shower,” I complain. “You smell, and not in a good way.”
Alice comes into the bathroom. “He can’t take a shower. He can’t even stand up. He’ll drown.”
“I can help him,” I offer, the words pop out of my mouth before I realize what I said. I’m anxious to keep myself busy while I wait for Chip to get here. I have to make sure nothing happened between us.
